Plot: Bijaya, a young widow, stays as a tenant with a few families in an old mansion in the ever-changing town of Bhubaneswar.
Sonia, a girl in her early twenties stays with her father and mother in the ground floor. Sonia's father works in a govt. office. Deba, a company executive, stays in the front, as an 'unknown' neighbour.
Sonia and Bijaya are friends. Bijaya serves Nila Mausi, an old widow, in a nearby ashram in the old town. Bijaya is in love with Pratap, a radical school teacher. She is torn in conflict on whether they should marry. She has the fear of becoming like the old widow and ending in a ashram. On the other hand, she is also scared of a new bondage with Pratap.
Pratap waits for her decision. Sonia is in infatuation with Deba. One day Deba is seen in his house with Asha, his company colleague. Sonia is disturbed and has a series of discussions with Bijaya regarding a woman's role in society.
One day, she moves out of the enclosed space of the house and cycles around the old town lanes. Sonia also accompanies Bijaya to serve Nila Mausi. Sonia is fed up with the static life every one is leading. Deba is on a target spree to sell his company's product. So is Asha. Sonia's father is seen eyeing a young, working girl of his daughter's age. Sonia's father and his friends consider themselves as 'Uttam Purusha'. Sonia's mother is mostly busy with household work and deities and sometimes in gossip with neighbourhood woman.
One day Sonia goes to the new extensions of the city, where there are thousands of empty flats. She meets a wanderer and she is excited after meeting him. The wanderer recites a couple of poems of Bhima Bhoi. Sonia brings the wanderer to Bijaya. Sonia, Bijaya and the wanderer move around the architectural splendour of the old Bhubaneswar. But then the wanderer goes off to wander more!
Rain comes. Inspired by the wanderer, Bijaya decides to marry Pratap. Nila Mausi is left alone. She is now looked after by attendant of the ashram. Sonia waits for the better moments. The epic flow of time continues.
